First time I have ever encountered this situation.
When we returned to the dock this evening, the port engine, Yanmar 420 CTX- would not shut down. I could hear a buzzer in the engine room but it would not shut the engine down.
Tried to cross out the wire but got the same buzz so I am assuming it is something on the engine that is a miff.
We rised the engine compartment, pulled off the air cleaner and put the bait board in front of the air intake to "choke off the air" and finally got her to shut down.
To be sure engine was OK, restarted great but then switch would not kill. Repeated the same process of choking off the air intake to kill the engine.
1998 38 Open with toggle start switches and bulb button kill switches on the helm instrument panel, port side.
Any thoughts or help is appreciated.
Thanks,
Jack

PS, owners manual no help. Not even mention except for some out dated "kill switch on the back of the engine that mine does not have.

Engine Stop Solenoid

I just changed my engine stop solenoid on my 315 Yanmar last month. My mechanic told me how to use my voltmeter to verify that was the problem, took about 10 minutes. It could be the start/stop button, I had to replace mine as well before. There should be a stop lever on the engine connected to the stop solenoid that you just pull back and it will kill the engine. You need to find that.

On my CAT engines, if my upper helm switch accidently gets turned on, the lower helm won't turn it off. In other words, both switches must be in the off position.

Thanks so much for the feedback. I am trying to locate the engine stop and go from there. No warning at all when it failed.
Thanks

I think I have a "Jury rigged" set up to allow quick shut down. No keys just on/off toggles that are 3 position to start but to shut down, toggles back to off position then the "push button" to stop the engines.
Thanks again. Process of location what does what to troubleshoot what is not turning off fuel pump to port engine.

I have the 6ly2stp in my 36 SX. I have replaced the Engine Stop Solenoid
twice. They fail. But you can stop the engin by performing the same action
the solenoid does. Move the arm backward and the engine shuts down.

Kill Switch:
Just a suggestion!! Are the switches off on the flying bridge??
I had similar problem with my 1999 32 Open, with turning engine off when the switches were engaged on the flying bridge. They must be off on the flying bridge to work on the helm at the bottom.
Right now I have the starbord switch on the flying bridge not starting the engine, while the switch at the lower helm works properly. Running the issue down as we speak, as they say!!
Good Luck!

For all members with teh 6CTX engine format, I now have the inside skinny after almost 2 months.
1) mine was a relay that is on the out boardside, same side as the fuel system. It is a 6 prong switch at is $57 from Yanmar that can be bought for $8.50 at radio shack.
2) Also, I now know where the manual kill switch is located. It is actually a horiziontal lever that looks like a throdle control but is actually the fuel cut off for the fuel pump.

I was originally off to buy the $165 switch when it was just the relay. I is located on the oposite side of the engine as the kill lever. It is in the wiring gang on the starboard side of each engine near the rear motor mount.

Hope this may help someone else. To keep this proper, best to spray the wiring harness with electrical spray that is waterproof...saltwater proof,

Mine was pure corrosion.
