I saw that a 29' boat sunk during the Oak Bluffs shark tournament and I heard a rumor that it was a Luhrs 29 Open. I am told that the boat encountered 8-14 ft seas and essentially split in half under the cockpit. Anyone heard this or maybe can put the rumor to rest? or maybe know the real details of what happened?

Doesnt name the manufacturer but states it was a 20 foot boat swamped by high seas.

20 ft boat 15 ft seas? I guess I am getting old. I wouldn't consider taking my 36 out in 10 foot seas for a shark tournement.

The above link claims it to be a 29 but it doesn't say what make/model.

I am the dealer in New England. There were 5 boats from our Marina at the tournament. none of those boats went out that day and they include a 32 Luhrs, 36' Northern Bay, Hatteras. I heard the boat that sank was airborne at one point when a Hatteras went by them after turning around. The seas were 12-15 from what I was told. Make your own assumptions about taking a 29' boat out and running it that way in those conditions. Thank God everyone made it back alive.

ok - but the question is still open, was it a Luhrs?

Just wondering why it matters what make boat it was. All boats can sink especially if they are handled poorly, if you believe the one article it sounds as if the people on that boat were a..holes, the guy who risked his own life and boat rescuing them wasn't even thanked. Not that a..holes deserve to sink, its just that they as a whole are poor boaters, we've all seen them and it seems to make the observations detailed by dave01 more plausable. Small boat, huge seas, poor seamanship is a recipe for disaster regardless of whether its a Luhrs or a Buddy Davis...

you can view the article in MV Times on line... a 29 luhrs center console is what I read. a friend told me, the boat was being hott shot, nose dive into a wave,(fool) when water flooded salon he paniced and ran for shore, as I know from being in that channel, this puts you brod side to massive tidal surge, and chop. As you could imagine, as he made the turn the water in the cockpit rolled outward and tucking the stern under the next wave swamping the entire rear deck . Bubbles.:dunno:
I had also heard part of the hull did fail... my sources said no... I am courious where you heard this, and what did fail, I wonder if the cabin hatch/slider was open allowing water to flood the lower cabin... seems to me, staying on the throttle( head way speed) and into the waves the 290 deck would shed a great amount of water. I think any boat can sink.
