Greetings and welcome.
The 38 is an awesome hull, I have a 2006 now and a 1996(for sale if you are open to options) that between them I have put over 4500 hours.
The bottom is fiberglass, the sides and transom are a cored system.
The DD were the higher horsepower option, I think 485HP. They are great motors, easy to have worked on. They will leak or drip oil, nature of the beast.
The fuel tank on both the 2006 and the 1996 is aluminum. The 1996 has a 400gallon main tank under the rear deck and 2 saddle tanks on the outboard side of the motors with about 80 gallons each and uses a transfer pump to move the fuel to the main.
The low hours indicate that the boat has not been used much, deisels like to be run so expect some issues as you use the boat.
Good luck.

The DD 671 TIB is a two stroke, Very reliable if horsepower kept below 400 HP. TIB is 485 HP I believe so engine is over stressed. I do not know about open but the 38 convertibles are aluminum tanks. Hull bottoms are solid FRP laminate, hull sides and decks are Balsa core. You are having the boat surveyed? Doug

I will not be doing a survey due to the fact that the boat is well under priced i dont know if that is smart or not but i will take my chance in refernce to the motors the boat has been in land storage for a year and the batterys were dead they charged the battery for a little and tried to fire up the motors on a 30 degree outside temperture and after 3 cranks the motors fired right up with little white smoke which made me belive the motors were in decent shape. How many hours do you fellow boaters belive i can get out of the motors before a rebuild and what kind of cruise should i expect

You are not having hull or engine survey done. At the least I would have hull survey done. Engine life determined by use by previous owners and how well they maintained engines. One jerk can destroy engine life. Cruise speed can be found on Yachtworld, check other 38 opens with same engine and you will get a ball park firgure. For engines I would at least have oil analysis done. Any diesel shop and that includes truck repair can do this for a reasonable price. It is over rated but its good to know if theres any anti freeze, or salt concentrations which indicates serious problems. In order for oil analysis to be real informative it has to be done on a regular basis. I would also check under engines for anti freeze or oil pools. use mirror to check oil pans for rust. Check turbos to see if they spin freely. Check bolt heads for any stripped ones which indicates someone worked on motor who did not know what he was doing. Hoses should not be spongy. Check for belt dust around pulleys. Check pulleys for any wobble. See if you can have aftercoolers and heat exchangers checked. DD have cylinder inspection ports, check for scoring of cylinders or rust. The TIB is over stressed at 485 HP. DD 671 came from factory at 300 HP. After market souped up engine to it's present state. Anything over 400 HP and reliability falls off sharply. Engine is very heavy at 3000 LBS with turbos. So long as it is under 400 HP it is very reliable engine. TIBs much less so. You should join boatdiesel.com and get Dave Pascoes book Mid Size Power Boats. Good Luck, Doug

I cannot add much to what John and Doug have advised. They are the Mac Daddys on the Open Luhrs.
I bought a 1998 38 Open with Yanmars and I can tell you even with surveys, the real proof in the pudding is sea time. I do not care what the test say, when the boat is out on the water and you put AT LEAST 2 hours on her, whatever is weak will likey show, and I do not mean putting around the harbor or marina. I mean a 2 hour sea trial at all RPM levels particulary at WOT to make sure she turns up RPMS and to hold oil pressure and they remain at operating temperature.
It is the one thing I did smart. After a reasonable boat and engine survey came back OK, I was not convinced so I demanded and more extensive sea trail. A GREAT DEAL OF MONEY CHANGED HANDS as a result of several issues that surfaced that did not surface during the survey. Vibration and running hot on port side engine turned up issues not in the surveys but only after a while on the water at 2200 to 2600 rpm.
Run the piss out her and put her though its paces. She is a battle wagon and will thrill you to death if she is set up right and dialed in. If not she will show you all her needs.
I pea my pants every time we go out now. She kicks serious ass with the big names and HUGE buck boats..
