Have a 99 290 Open with Yanmar 300's trans are 1.6/1 wheels are 17x16. It was suggested by mechanic could increase speed and economy by changing trans to 2/1 and wheels to 19 in diameter. Before spending so much, hoping to find someone who has such a setup already.

I don't have personal experience with re-propping, but if you get no response here, there is another site that you may be able to get information out of. If you go to http://boatdiesel.com. They have a propeller calculator, and many other diesel-related tools. I'm not sure what you can do as a visitor, I am a subscriber.
To the administrators, if this is an inappropriate posting by listing another site, let me know and I will delete the url (or you can).
Good luck,

It looks like your boat has the wrong props on it. Before spending the kind of money it would take to replace the trannys, I would try the correct props. Your boat was originally certified with 19x17 3-Blade Medium Cup Bronze prop. I would certainly think that a good set of props in the proper size would make a huge differance over a 17x16 (assuming its a 3 Blade). Hope this helps. Let us know. -Jeff

I have worked with Richard Masters in Florida. He supplied the Yanmars for my '02 29'. He is probably the most knowledgable and accessable President of a company I have ever come accross. He DOES return calls! He can help with your prop questions.

Here is the number if you would like to call Mastry 727-522-9471. I would imagine they would give you the same info I listed above. That prop size is what Mastry recommended when the boat was originally run for certification.

Thanks for reply boat has 4 blade 17x16, rpms top out at 3800 right where they should. I will check out info on 19x17 3 blades. Thanks John

Check your manuals. Mine suggests that you prop the boat for higher RPM's so when the boat is loaded, you can still get 3800. Be careful. The manual gives good direction on the proceedure. Hardest part is getting someone to loan you the props until you get the right ones!

What Alanan said is accurate. Almost all manufacturers over prop their boats. Keep in mind when the boats are run for certification they are at probably the lightest load the boat will see. Most of the electronic displays now have load percentages displayed on the engine displays which help with propping, but with analog gauges the best thing to do is arrange a moderate load and prop from there.
