attached are a few pics of our efforts to refresh the cabin with new carpeting under the V berth and on the step. The cabin sole was sanded and faired prior to installation of the new Amtico "teak and holly" flooring...Note that we removed trim where possible to ensure that the edges look as good as possible. we caulked around the edges in the remaining places. We also have a matching piece of carpet with bound edges to cover the entire cabin sole. The carpet under the V berth was not glued and the edges will be bound in case it gets wet (the A/C pan overflowed at least once and wet the carpet).
next up in the cabin will be sanding all of the teak to remove mildew and applying varnish/polyurethane (I have some research to do...). That will be followed by new overhead rod racks above the forward berth for 6-8 trolling rods.
enjoy the pics....

Wow - great job. We are thinking of doing the same to our cabin. It needs new flooring. Where did you get your material from? How did the install go? Was the flooring hard? How did you get the carpet edges bound?

wit,
the flooring is made by lonseal. i dont recall where we ordered it. found a place on the web. cost was maybe $350 inc shipping over a year ago. it is a very heavy product. when we initially laid it out, we realized that the factory floor was very uneven and the "valley" in front of the fridge was going to look bad if the vinyl dipped or worse we would have a buble since the flooring is heavy and didnt want to even depress into the seam. we used bondo body filler and filled/faired the floor. took awhile and then sanding.... easily a total of 5-6 hrs labor. then it is just a matter of troweling on floor adhesive and laying the vinyl, taking your time to trim around the edges...i think you could get a vinyl flooring guy to do it since they will be "skilled" at trimming. we removed the front bulkhead (it just unscrews) and the trim piece below the galley so the vinyl could go under and get a real clean edge. the other edges were butted and then caulked.
as for the carpet, we went to avalon carpet and bought a large berber remnant. took the old carpet to get a big piece templated and the edges bound. we took the scraps and redid the step and the ve berth floor. total cost of carpet and binding was around $350 i think. not cheap but ast time we used a crappy cut pile carpeting and that cost over $200. hoping the berber will stay cleaner looking and wear better.
overall it turned out very well. i m happy with the $1000 we spent.
i hope the vinyl is not too slippery with wet shoes....quite a few boat manufacturer are using it in galleys and heads so it must be decent stuff.
flexteak/plasteak on the cabin sole would be real interesting....

Irish,
Thanks for the info... My cabin needs new flooring and carpet. It's would be a major improvment.
Where did you go to get the carpet bound? Your in NJ also right?
I have the same dip in the floor. I am thinking that self leveling compound used for hardwood and tile floors to even out the bumps and dips would work as well (pending your boat is sitting drydock and perfectly level)

wit,
we got the remnant and binding done by avalon carpet. probably not the cheapest. measure how much carpet you need total and look around for remnants. i think you need a piece 12' ft wide by 10' long to get the big piece out and then have enought scrap for the rest of the pieces.
any carpet place can bind edges. costs about $1 per running foot...
as for levelling, the dip is pretty deep. it took 3 applications of bondo - it is more than 1/2" deep....you need to plan on using something higher build than a levelling compound for the dip....

I've used leveling compond for over 1/2 inch. The stuff works great to make a room that is not level perfectly flat and level - even 1" off from end to end.

Looks great! I like it. When we bought ours, the previous owner had a spare piece of carpet from Luhrs, I took it and had it bound. I like the look of the teak flooring though.
