View Full Version : Shore Power Question

Our 38 has 50amp service. Our marina at our slip has 30 amp. We bought an adaptor that draws from two 30amp pugs into our 50apm.
When break is tripped to shore power, line 1 is reading 110 and line 2 about 30 until I turn the battery charger on and then the line 2 drops to zero.
To verify it is not on the boat, I start the 9W Kohler gen and then throw the AC power and line 1 and line 2 are both 110 and when the battery charger is on, no voltage drop.
We have no documentation with the boat so I am not sure the Luhrs system for show power will allow 2 30 amps to feed the 50 on the boat.
Thanks for any help or insights.

Hey Jack,
I have used a splitter for years, the only time ihave had a problem is when the splitter failed. Had to buy a new one due the old one going bad on one side.
You might have a bad splitter, I would sure start there.

Jack,

Concur that you might need a different "reverse Y" adapter. I had a Marinco that I bought and the first time I tried to use it, I had the EXACT SAME results. Line 1 was at full voltage, and line 2 was about half. I contacted Marinco and sent them my device. They replaced it no questions asked.

That being said, I haven't had a chance to test it out. My "test plan" is to borrow someone's Y that goes from a single 50 amp (on the pedastle), to two 30 amp females. I'll then plug in my Marinco Reverse Y into each of the 30's, and that gives me a single 50 (which I'll plug the boat's 50 amp cord into).

Once I do the test, and see 110/120 volts on each of the two legs, I'll be satisfied that the Y works correctly. And I'll make a posting here.

Once again Joe and John you are my guardian angles.
I think it has to do with the voltage of the splitter/adaptor and the shore power.
I will call Marinco as well and see if they can help here too...$300 plus bucks it needs to be right.
Joe, which adaptor did they send you? Thought I might request the same if your results are good.
Joe I use to have a 32 Open when we lived in Williamsburg, VA 1986-1997 and I ran out of Ruddie. Lower SC offshore is so much rougher, I went to the 38 Open and she just eats these offshore 5-6 footer like nothing.
Thanks again,
Jack

The Marinco adapter I have is the "167RYN" reverse Y. Hopefully I'll get a chance to test it out this weekend at the boat.

That is the same adaptor I have. Marinco said if the two (2) 30 amp dock power is not producing 200+ volts, the reverse adaptor will not work. I am having the marina check the voltage now. If they do produce a combined 200+ volts and I do not get full volts on both lines, then the adaptor is defective.
Will advise also,
Thanks again

Another suggestion is to ask your marina to convert the two 30 Amp plugs on pole to a single 50 Amp. I asked my marina and the did it in 20 minutes no questions asked.
