View Full Version : When is Gas Too Expensive?

It's that time of year folks... Gas prices are through the roof once again and there is no end to the price hikes in sight. How does the gas prices affect your boating habits if at all?
Tie-in - I read a story recently about the future of diesel electric hybrid engines for sport fishing boats. What is your interest in that and would you pay the higher price upfront to save on gas and emissions over the long haul?
Just try to spark some conversation!

Hybrids seem to be the future. :dimebag:
Have hybrids advanced far enough so that we are not sacrificing power for economy?

I was discussing Hybrids the other day with my service guy for my truck. He told me that the Hybrid thing is not exactly all it is cracked up to be. He said that the standard life for a vehicle now is 100,000 miles. He said that in that period of time by tests that have been done. You get better gas mileage with a Hummer than you do with a Hybrid. Don't know how true it is but it is interesting to think about.
:)Couple of years ago, when fuel prices were not so high, I didn't mind running over to Bimini wide open. Might have spent $1000.00 for Gas to fish a couple of days. Today I will take a little more time to get there but sure saves on the fuel bill. Taking a trip over on a friend's sail boat (11 hours) taught me that going slow was not to bad and more time to enjoy the Ocean. Was a nice trip but I still rather be on my Luhrs.

IMHO It is too expensive now, it crossed that threshold at about $1.40.
I can afford it now, however it will always be painfull when Argentinians pay about 14-17 cents per gallon. It will continue to be painfull when the oil companies continue to post record profits. Cant wait till we have hydrogen powered boats or better yet boats that run off water(when tat happens they'll fence off the coastline!).

But they say "there is very little profit in fuel sales".

I guess you can look at the other side of the coin. In Europe they are paying in US dollars up to 7.00 a gallon. Australia raises prices every Wed. morning regardless of what is happening with the oil prices.
So we are all in the same boat.
It really bites when you go to a gas station and they only allow you to put 75.00 in your tank and it only gets my truck to 3/4 of a tank. Hurts in the old wallet.

In Louisiana there is a $0.40 per gallon (plus or minus) road tax on gas and diesel. Historically, the cost of "off road" diesel was less than gasoline by the amont of the tax or more.
In recent months the cost of "off road" diesel (w/o the road tax) is more than the cost of gasoline with the road tax. I guess the marine and farm diesel boys (off road diesel) decided they could screw us for "record profits" like their brothers are doing on the road side.
I recently ran my 32 Open to Grand Isle for the winter tuna run at the Lump. I have a friend who is letting me stay in his slip for a few months, as his boat is in another location.
Run 159 miles one way; fuel burn 152 gallons; fuel cost $3.25/gallon; fuel cost $493.00;fuel rate 17.1 gallons/hr.
The going and coming back will cost me $1,000.00. The 3 to 5 fishing trips at 60 mile runs each way will be much more.
What a price we pay for our toys and the mighty "quest" for adventure. At 58 years old I will not stop until broke!!

You Go.
Thanks a great attitude to have. You can't take it with you so you might as well enjoy it while you can.
Just do us all a favor and catch a few big ones along the way.
