I am in the process of buying a 2000 32 Open with a pair of CAT 3116 300hp engines.
In the sea trial, she topped out at 2800 RPMs only running about 21.5 Knots, and crusing around 18. There was a fair amount of foul on the boat that I would have expected to clean off after about 10 minutes of running.
They are going to pull the boat and presure wash it and we'll try again during the survey.
Does they sound correct or does it sound like the engines are not putting out the correct HP?
Thanks for any help.

Do you have David Pascoes book "Mid Size Power Boats". If you do refer to page 261. If you do not have his book give me your fax number. Also it would be a good idea to review engine model histories on Boatdiesel.com, You will find out which diesels are good and the models which are trouble prone. There is a wealth of information on diesels at that site for a one year membership fee of $25.00. Worth every penny.

something is wrong. we have 3116s that have been re-rated from 300 to 350hp. even at 300 hp with 4 blade props and a full load of fuel and 4-5 guys, with full tab, it cruised at 2400rpms at 20kts+. top speed at 2800 rpms was 25-26kts.

Thanks for the response. I did find out what was wrong - the bottom of the boat was very foul. After a cleaning a a fresh coat of bottom paint, we cruised from Maryland to NJ at 2500 at 21 knots and did top out around 26.5 at 2800.

Are you keeping the boat in NJ? I am in Point Pleasant.
How did the boat handle on your trip?

Tom,
I am also in Point Pleasant (Clarks Landing). Where are you?
The ride from MD to NJ was going great until a submerged log decided to attack my props off LBI. They are being sent out and should be back in the water by end of next week.

congrats! Those speeds are right on for 300 hp. With the 350 cats, good 4 blades and a clean bottom, we run about 24kts at 2400 rpms and top out at 27kts at 2800 rpm fully loaded (fuel fuel and 4-5 guys).
we purchased almsot purchased our 32 from Clarks back in '99 but then we found a lightly used 32 in Boston at Russo Marine - owner was trading up to a 36SX. We have run our 32 from Boston all the way down to the Keys. We dock in Wildwood Crest, NJ.

I am in Garden State marina. Why did you go to Maryland to buy a boat?

irishrogue,
that would be some fuel bill running down to FL these days.
Tom,
I purchased a 2000 year model (used) so I had to go to the boat instead of letting the boat come to me. It also turns out that my preferred dealer is Clarks Landing (repeat customer) and they actually had this boat at one of their maryland locations.
It worked out well since they took my old boat on trade at Point Pleasant.
I did look at another Luhrs in NJ that was gas and the fiberglass was in rough shape.
