Can any one tell me the purpose of the small groundng wire from the altenator negitive to the block... when I replaced them the old ones didnt seem to be attached all that well so I didn't bother to install new ones (being lazy and cramped) they seem to work normal. So is this necessary or a case of "Overkill"...

The reason there is no difference is the ground is probably making a connection through your alternator housing, to the bracket to the block. I would connect the ground wire so that if any corrosion occures with bracket etc the wire will complete circuit.

Derik says' must be secondary back up for ground, He thinks is the small wire coming from the harness. I thought this is to gauge... Robert says might be part of bonding system, altho no apparent connection to bonding strip...

The ground wire from the alternator the the block come from the engine manufacturer that way to assure a good ground to the alternator at all times. Some engines like Cummins need it.

My opinion is if it was there before than it needs to be there now.

Hope this helps.
