I have a 1999 Luhrs Open. One aggrevating feature has been the non-insulated storage or cooler box on the port side. Ice melts like in an oven. Cannot keep my beer cold on a trip.

The other aggrevation is the non-insulated fish box in the transom.

Both of these systems should have been insulated from the factory. I would have eagerly paid the difference for these costs.

Has anyone out there attempted to insulate these two boxes? Pros and cons would be appreciated !!!

I have taken an off shore fish bag of the approximate size of the fish box and laid it in the box. Just pack the fish and ice, when you are done fishing unzip and let drain then wash.

Rusty,
Just closed on a 1998 Open and I am talking to the yard that is completing my "punch list". Possible solutions we are exploring:
1- Transom box we are exploring is shooting "liquid" insulation, like you would use from Home Depot, around the box, getting as thick as possible and making it as presentable as possible before it sets. Finishing it off with either fiberglass cloth and painting to match.
2- Boxes behind helm and front of the cockpit are really just a matter of how much room you want to give up by using styrofoam inserts. They can be again, cut and molded to provide awesome insulation.

During the sea trail, I sat a cooler, I got with a shipment of Omaha Steaks for Xmas, down in the port side livewell, had 12 waters and a couple of German suds. After the trail and after the complete survey some 7 hours later I had almost zero ice melt.

I think confining the space you need to what you want to cool and keeping the enclosure tight does the trick.

Sorry to be long winded but we are working on exactly the same solutions.

Let me know if you get a good solution as well.

we have a 98 32 Open. We share your pain....we do not use the transom box at all. there is an air space between the outer and inner liners that presumably could be drilled and liquid low expanding foam pump in but i m not sure if say 1/2" foam insulation would do much.....

as for the P/S boxes over the engine room, we have added 2" soundown foam insulation to the underside for noise control (actually the entire engine room received a layer over top of the OEM insulation) and it helped a little. We also use the metallic bubble wrap in the boxes themselves - it seems to work marginally....I have toyed with the idea of spraying the liquid foam on the undersides of the boxes from the engine room but doubt that we could get it on evenly so that it didnt look a mess...

the boxes barely hold more than a couple 30 - 40 lb tuna anyway so we bring a canyon bag most of the time....
