Just a note of interest, installed a Raymarine autopilot system purchased on e bay, new and complete in the box.
This is on a "91 3400. Installation was straight forward, and set up was easy.
First real use was a trip from Tolchester Md to Chesapeake City, Md. I never touched the wheel ! All steering was by button ! Average speed 8.4 mph at 1250 rpm....fuel gauge barely moved as it uses 4 gph at that setting.
Did we not get into boating to spend time on the water ? I like it, run like a trawler, but with the option of getting home by dark, or outrunning a storm !!
Takes all the stress out of slow boat steering...we loved it.

I am in the process of buying a 1992 3420 -I'll have the survey done next wednesday (7/2/8)- and if everything goes well I'll close on it a week after. Anyhow, I've been looking on e-bay to the very same autopilot system. Do you have pictures of the install? I am pretty handy but I'd like to analize the job difficulty and pictures go a long way.

4gph is admirable. I hope I can emulate your fuel conservation meassures.

Photos would be difficult. Pump is mounted on the bridge, just behind steering station. Computer and compass are behind the TV in the salon, and, of course, the rudder reference is in the bilge....getting to that was the most difficult !
Raymarines kit was complete with wiring . Only needed hydraulic fittings and connection wires. Was very pleased !

Hello Dan, I have been doing the exact same thing for some time now. You don't get there as fast but it sure saves fuel and you still have the option to run if you need too. The best is you are still on the water and using your boat. I have an 89' 34 Sportfish and love the vessel. Have a great season and good luck. Sportfish

I used the S 1, type 1, with 6002 control head. Part # E12106.
Everything was in the box with exception of hydraulic fittings and basic wiring to 12 V.
All harness wiring was in there. I have no complaints !
Incidently, pump was mounted on the bridge, directly below the helm. Works perfect with no check valve needed.
