View Full Version : Why does Luhrs use a double tapered shaft?

After we had a shaft break inside a coupling (yes, INSIDE the coupling), we had to replace one of our shafts. The boat is a 2000 luhrs convertible w/ yanmar 315 diesels. What is the reason for using a shaft with 2 tapered ends?? Ease of installation? Wouldn't a shaft with no taper on the coupling end be stronger (more metal contact)?
