I have owned my 1989 342 Tournment since 1995. I repowered in 2000 with 315 HP Yanmars so I could make trips to the canyons in the Northeast to fish for tuna. We also replaced the old head with a Vacuflush and a 36 gallon holding tank. My wife and I have also made trips to Nantucket, Martha's Vinyard, Block Island and Long Island, NY. This has been a great boat for us . It has lots of room for a boat this size. We own our slip in Mystic, Ct. where we dock our Luhrs. This has been a great boat to cruise and fish out of.

Dave I just purchased the same boat last year in Lenoka harbor. its a 1989 342 sportfisherman tournament. but it has the original twin 454s. Last year it ran beatifully for the whole season. I try to do all the maintenance myself and it keeps me very busy. I would love to change the moters out for deisels but at this time I find it cost prohibted. Is your boat in winter storage? Mybe we will see each other out on the water this summer. Have a great winter.

Dave if you dont mind me askin you what was the cost converting from gas to diesels? I have a 40 luhrs with 454s wich i would be intreresting switching to diesels Also will you think the 315 HP engines like yours would be ok for my boat wich weights around 26.000 pounds? Thanx again Peter

Dixiestriker,
Yanmar does not make the motor s I have in 315 HP anymore. They are only made in 370 and 440 HP. this is the 6LYA-UTE version. They do make the 6LPY-STE in 315 HP, Toyota motor, this was the 300 HP in 2000 they changed the rating around 2002. I think you should use at least the 370 HP 6LY or larger motor. My cruise speed with the 6LYA motors is 20 - 21 Knots. I know that your boat came with the option of either 350 or 375 3208 Cats and I think the cruise speed was about 18 Knots.
Charles,
Where is Lenoka Harbor? Yes, the boat is in winter storage. I will get it back in the water around the first of May. It is not cheap to repower. In 2000 it cost me 25,000 for each motor with the transmission, gages and wire harnesses. I also had the generator replaced and had AC added. At that time to repower with just the engines it would have cost about 75,000. You will also have to replace the shafts and props and struts. The origional shafts were 1-1/4 inch. You will need at least 1-1/2 inch shafts. If you do not use your boat much or you do not make long runs where you need the range it is probally not worth repowering with diesels. That being said I would do it all again. I like the safety and range of the diesels. I now make the run 90 to 100 miles out troll for about 4 hours and return home, also running the gen set the entire time, using about 230 gallons of fuel.

Hi Elvinchi,
The props I have are 20 in. Dia. and a 24.5 pitch with a no. 5 cup. I also have 2/1 reduction gears. Yours may be a little different because of wieght and gears but this should get you in the ball park.
Good luck with your 342, Dave

I love my 1990 luhrs 342 tour boat, if i ever get it back into the water is a different story. I have owened my boat for over 2 years and only used it 2 times. 1st time was taking it out to sea just to test her out and see how she handled, i blew the starboard oil filter which destroyed the engine, i paid ed's marine to repower the boat with diesel which they did but did it all wrong. The boat was in its slip 2 weeks after we put it back in the water and she was on the bottom, we did an emergency pull and sent it to kent narrows to be fixed. All they did was tear the boat apart and keep saying we need more money. Finally after many months they found over 40,000 dollars and are again working on her. She should be done in about three weeks. I will post picks when she is repainted. Her name is Leah-Veronica and instead of a port of call i am going to have PAID FOR TWICE, MD put on her
