I spent quite a bit of time in today's heat crawling around my Luhrs engine room trying to familiarize myself with all the systems and gadgets. The one thing I couldn't find were drain plugs/valves for the twin 30 gal. fresh water holding tanks. I know that you can drain/flush them by running faucets until they are empty, but shouldn't they have a drain? 1990, 34' Luhr's Motor Yacht, Open Cockpit.

Should and do are two different things, I dont think they do.

My tanks in my 32 Open do not have drains on my fresh water tanks, I have always ran the faucets to flush them. Thinking about it now, if I leave the valves open and then open the filter and the water should just drain out into the bildge. Pumping it out and letting it go over the side is better then letting it go into the bildge.

I have a 342 Tournment. There are no drains for the water tanks. I run the tanks as dry as possible through the faucets then add non-toxic antifreeze for the winter and open all the faucets until the antifreeze comes out. I also drain and bypass the water heater so I don't have to add antifreeze to the water heater. I think it is worst in the spring. It takes a few flushes with fresh water to get rid of the pink non-toxic antifreeze taste and smell. The past couple of seasons I have been using Fresh Water DeWinterizer And Revitalize by Camco. It seems to really help clear the water faster.
Welcome and good luck with your boat.

Your Luhrs is very similar to my 1990, 34' convertable MY. Actually, I think it's basically the same vessel. I see that you are in Mystic. I'm in Noank. I'm trying to learn how to winterize my vessel. If you need help winterizing your vessel in the Fall, I'd be happy to give you a hand and learn how it's done. I have to pull my vessel in early Oct. because I am leaving for Florida on Oct. 15th. When do you do your winterization?

Hi Gary,
I pull my boat the first week of Oct. We try to beat the cold and we will be off to Chicago to see our new grandson. I keep my boat in Mystic Shipyard East, 18 Stafford St. on the South dock slip no. 4011. The boat name is Cruise Control. I will be there this weekend if you feel like stoping by, I can give you an idea of the winterization process. We have owned this boat sense 1995 and never had problems winterizing.

My Luhrs is at Spicers Marina in Noank, slip H 13. She's named Cavalier. I have only owned her three weeks, so I'm trying to learn as much as I can. I'll be at my boat this weekend also for the Groton Long Point fireworks. I'm going to try to come see your vessel on Sat.
Thanks for the offer.

we installed new smaller fresh water tanks when we did the engine room refit. lower profile tanks make it easier to lie on them when outside of the diesels. And we installed inspection ports on them so that we can shop vac them dry for winterizing and reach in and clean them as needed. I like being able to see inside the tank even if we do not drink from them...
