Hello everyone my name is Tony, me and my cousin recently purchased a 2007 41 convertible from Key Largo Boating Center in Key Largo FL, ( Jerry Patterson ) was the sales guy, this is the second boat we have purchased from Jerry, great guy if your looking to buy Luhrs, Pro Line, Everglades, call him he will get your deal done, and a great deal at that.

Now to other matters with the 41. We have had it now for about 3 months. We hop over to Bimini all the time. Overall great boat, but I do feel that this boat maybe part of the recall, it tends to fishtail somewhat is rough waters. I am in the process of finding out.

I recently pulled the boat out of water to do some of the warranty work that was agreed when the boat was purchased (punchlist). I was amazed when we pulled the boat out and discovered that the bottom paint basically fell off where the sling's grab the boat. I asked the boat yard personell what had happened, they pointed out that it seemed that the bottom of the boat was never sanded and properly prepared for the bottom paint. I informed the dealer of the situation and was informed that they DO NOT use barrier coating Paint. The way I understood this was that the type of bottom paint they use must not have the barrier coating chemical. I think that for the amount of money we paid for the boat, this would have been done, or come as a standard for all of the Models.

I would love to hear from some of you and see if any of you have had this problem.

Thanks

Tony

Hey Tony,

To start out, congrats on the purchase. Do you know the hull number of your boat? What do you mean it is fishtailing?

Second, did you say that the dealer did not use primer before bottom painting the boat or did you say that Luhrs did this? I know at Luhrs they use a gray sandless primer before the bottom piant is applied.

Tony

You might want to talk to some of the other owners on this topic. This model and its problems has been beat to death on the hull truth. The recall was to address this problem but some of the owners are not happy.Good luck with your boat -- I hope you don't have the issues as some of the others.

well they told me that our boat was not part of the recall. I really cannot compare to any other boat. All of the boats that i have owned in the past were open fishermen, and most recently was a 35 Express Proline with Triple 250's. I have a buddy that owns a 55 Viking but i think you cannot compare the two.

I will keep everyone posted.

Thanks for the congrats, I went to the boatyard today and the guys who are going to work on the boat pointed out that the Hull was as smooth as a babies butt. they told me that it looked that the bottom was not properly prepared. I can send you pictures to show how were the slings to lift the boat just took off the bottom paint leaving a perfect white stripe.

Hi Tony,
Congrats on the purchase of a beautiful boat. We recently bought a 36 convertable and to our amazement, when she was hauled for the pre-purchase survey, the bottom paint that the previous owner had applied was flaking off in dinner plate sized chunks. It had only been applied about 4 months prior with very little use since. We realized that there was no barrier paint and just like yours, our bottom is smooth as a babys. She was lift kept by the prior owner so there was no blister or wetness issue but it is certainly not a job we are looking forward to paying for after forking over big $s for the boat. I too am very surprised that these boats would leave the factory with no barrier coat. Is this normal or an oversight? Anyone else?

I have had a similar problem with a portion of my hull where it seems that the bottom paint doesn't adhere well. I was told that possibly there was a residue of the "mold release" agent that keeps the paint from adhereing as it should. I have hull # LHRJC149D900. If it is a leftover residue of the releasing agent, how do you get rid of it?

I am researching the 40 , 2000ish conv. to ship to Thailand, where it will stay in the water most of the time. I understand that there is an epoxy bottom paint that lasts for years. Anybody tried it, or have researched it, if so, what prep is need prior to application. Also anybody put in a dishwasher under the cooker, instead of those toxic crap microwaves??? Thanks.

I do not use the epoxy but a couple of years ago I helped a buddy get his boat preped for using it. He had to make sure ALL of the previous paint was removed... I mean ALL of it, it was a pain... the prep also included wiping the hull down several times with a cleaner/thinner... but the stuff held up like iron. A bit overkill for where we boat.. freshwater, Lake Michigan but may work well in your situation.

So far it seems that Luhrs is coming through with all promised, they have informed our agent that sold us the boat. Jerry Patterson form Key Largo Boating, that they were going to take care of everything. The boat is still at the boatyard, so far were just waitiing for the boatyard and luhrs to settle on the final number's, so far Luhrs has really stepped up.

Pascoe's book does not recommend barrier coating. No matter what you put on your bottom the wax has to be removed first. The wax was left on when the boat was built. It helps builder remove hull from mold. Any wax remover will work. Next the area below water line has to be sanded with very light sandpaper. Many dealers use a liquid sandpaper that does not work very well. Old adage, "If you want it done right, do it yourself.

Greetings,
I have a 2006 38IPS that had similar problems with the paint. I finally soda blasted the bottom, and then applied epoxy Tuff Stuff from Sea Hawk. I used their Biocop TF.
It is great primer and paint.
I live in the Florida Keys so the enviornment is harsh on the bottom.
No barnacles or crude after 1 year of the job that was done.
Also used Prop speed on all metal surfaces, a pain to apply but it works!

Good luck
