I recently had a leak at the pump end of the hydraulic system that raises the engine access hatch of my 38' Open. Just in case you don't know, the hatch can be raised manually by crawling (big guys might need to send in the wife!) into the engine room thru the forward hatch and inserting a long screwdriver at the jacking point at the top of the pump, which is located on my boat on the after end portside bulkhead. In my case, there was just enough hydraulic fluid left in the tank to raise the hatch.
I wanted to find a seal kit for the pump, manufactured by Trident Corporation of Hicksville, Ohio. I believe that the same system is installed on all model years of the 38' Open. Turns out Trident was bought out by Anderson Copper & Brass of Chicago, one of Warren Buffet's many companies, dissolved in 2008, and nobody makes that particular system anymore (thanks, Warren).
It became necessary to remove the pump from the bulkhead in order to take it to a hydraulic seals store. If you have to remove the pump from the bulkhead, remember to shore up the hatch with timber prior to removal or you will have a nasty headache! Luckily, I was able to find equivalent seals.

change to electric ASAP. That system will cause you more problems than it is worth.

Motor is on the lift rod that anchors to the struts in the bilge.

Well worth the effort.

I'm surprised about you reporting problems with the hydraulic lift. Mine has not given me one iota of problems (so far).
