The boat project was completed and the end result was better than expected. I was surprised how much was packed into a 25' boat, Luhrs did a good job balancing fishability with some creature comforts on this model.
The work was done at Johnson's Boat Works in RI. When I first entertained this my goal was to have at least a 25 knot cruise and in speaking with Ed, he was confident that the boat would perform well w/ a mid to high 20 knot cruise. Aftering hearing many different opinions on cruise speed, he was very accurate.
The mechanical upgrade included a new Yanmar 315, ZF 63A 2:1 gear, 1 1/2 shaft, dripless, and a DQX 4 blade 19 x 23 w/ # 3 cup prop.
The final sea trial data after trying a couple of props gave the following:
Idle 4.3 knots, 3000 rpm 22.6 knots, 3400 25.6 knots, 3600 rpm 27.8 knots, 3900 rpm 29.9 knots.
Fuel burn on average has been (17 hours / 126 gallons & 27 hours 136 gallons) 5 - 7 gallons per hour so far.
The boats performance overall improved quite a bit to say the least and the fuel economy should be significant as it can run comfortably at 3000 rpm.
Now hopefully we have a good summer to enjoy it.....
Additional Note:
The original rudder on the boat was too small so I replaced it with a larger hi-speed type rudder. The rudder is @13" wide & @19" long which made a tremendous difference in the boats performance at slow speeds & at cruise. It operates at low speed like an outdrive & at cruise holds its track w/o wandering even in a beam sea. In a following sea the boat pushes through w/o any problems and does not get pushed around.
