I need to move my boat, a 1998 290 Open, from Puerto Penasco, Mexico to San Carlos, Mexico on the Sea of Cortez.
It's about 300 miles by water. Got a quote from a boat transport of $1,900 to pull it on my trailer. I think it's a lot of money since it's only about 350 miles by land.
That part of the world has very few places where fuel is available. On my route there is only one in Kino Bay which is about 200 miles south of Puerto Penasco.
I'm concidering doing it by water but am not sure if I would have enough fuel to make it.
The engines have been completely rebuilt with 10 hrs on them. They are 350 Marine Power, 320hp each.
What would be my most economical speed to make this trip? Slow cruise, trolling (8 knots), or even running on one engine at a time? Going slow is not a problem for me.
Obviously, I would pick the right weather window.

Thanks for all advice.

John,

I have a 2007 28 open with crusader 5.7 efi captains choice, i also have flo scans on my boat, according to my numbers you only have 230 mile range on that boat if it holds 300 gallons of fuel, changing your speed does not seem to change fuel consumtion too much.,
not what you wanted to hear but those are the numbers i got on my boat

The best test would be to run at displacement speed for a few hours starting with a full tank, return to the fuel dock and fill up. You will need to keep a log of how many miles you run and and if you are running with current/wind. You should be able to drastically reduce fuel consumption at displament speed, espcieally if you can run with the current/tides and wind.

At planing speed, Marks got it pegged - you don't have enough fuel.

Mark, which model of the flo scans do you have?

It doesn't look like I am going to be able to sail it there and not have to worry that I'll run out of fuel.
My plan now, is to trailer it there myself with an escort.
