Hello to all of you current and prospective Luhrs owners!

My name is Jim Krueger and I am writing this to let you know that I have taken over as Head of the Luhrs Sales and Marketing Department effective immediately. Some of you may remember me from the past, as I started with Luhrs Corporation twelve and a half years ago as Director of Sales and Marketing. During my tenure with the company, I have had the privilege of working with a lot of talented people to design, engineer and manufacture as well as sell Luhrs Sport Fishing boats to boat owners such as you throughout the world. I have enjoyed the interaction with Luhrs owners at various rendezvous, boat shows and dealer open houses. But let me digress into my work history in more detail for those of you who do not know me.

I am 55; born in Oconto Falls, WI, have an Associates Degree in Industrial and Architectural Model Building, which led me in to a career spanning over thirty-five years to date in the Marine Industry. My first job at Cruisers, Inc. focused on engineering and bill of materials items, which led into sales and marketing. Over the years I have worked for Sea Ray, Bertram Yachts and the sister company Trojan Yacht, Tollycraft, Shamrock and Luhrs/Mainship. In each case I have been deeply involved in the evolution of all phases of the product and how it is used on the water.

My first year here was devoted to Luhrs, and then years two and three were split between Luhrs and Mainship Sales and Marketing responsibilities. In year four, we decided to separate the two sales efforts so each could focus on serving their respective dealer and customer base. I chose to work on the Trawler program and John Sejeck was promoted to lead the Luhrs program. Thanks to the efforts of many people and the boat buying public, Mainship is now the largest Trawler Manufacturer in the world. Since David Taylor has moved on, I will assume Luhrs Sales and Marketing responsibilities in addition to my charge as VP of Mainship Operations. Experienced Luhrs Regional Sales Managers Don Smith, Ken Stofflet and Sales Coordinator Elanda Floyd will continue to assist Luhrs Dealers and Customers. We will be working hand in hand with Roger Yarborough, VP of Operations for Luhrs who is also an experienced manufacturing and marketing pro in the Marine Industry. Roger was previously with Luhrs for nine years from 1985 through 1995.

And now, I’d like to comment on rumors circulating about Luhrs.

1 – Luhrs in not about to be sold to Brunswick or Ferretti.

2 – Luhrs is not going out of business; boat sales are soft for all boat companies. To address this business climate, we made the decision to continue CNC wood shop operations in Midway and transfer the 34 Pilot and Trawler production to the St Augustine plant, reducing our cost of doing business, while keeping the Midway plant until higher production is needed.

In the last year alone, Luhrs has introduced the 35 Convertible, now introducing the 31 IPS model and is working on a 35 Open, while Mainship introduced the 43 Trawler and Pilot. Mainship is just introducing new two staterooms, two head versions of the Trawler and Pilot along with a new 31 Pilot in December of this year. You don’t make this kind of investment in new models unless you are financially strong.

3 – All of the early 41 Convertible owners were contacted and most where happy with the construction and handling characteristics of their boats despite what a couple of guys are saying. Because a few were not, Luhrs authorized a recall notice and has gone out to fix those boats. We have been sued by one current owner and the courts will decide where it goes from here.

4 – The latest posting on the hull truth is that Warren Luhrs is getting a boat slip for a boat other than a Luhrs and they are suggesting it might be a Bertram. The connotation is that there is something sinister going on here – get a life. Warren is a world-class sailor and enjoys the Mainship cruising life style. We have built three boats for him over the last six years and the latest is a 30-foot “Legend” built by Mainship.

I will be monitoring the Luhrs site as I do the Mainship site to stay in contact with our owners and keep the discussions to facts, not rumors.

Yours truly,

Jim,

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on your new position within the company. Thank-you for clearing up things for us. I for one have been following the epic saga on that other site and I know that there is much more going on than what has been posted. It is very heartening to learn that Luhrs is not going anywhere anytime soon, and that you are continuing to develop new models. I for one am glad I purchased my boat (I bought my 2004 38 Open as the first owner in 2006), and am looking forward to a long relationship with you all.

I understand that there have been a number of personnel changes within the company. In the past I had (very favorable) dealings with Brad Sanguinetti. Subsequent to his changing positions, I was contacted by and spoke with on a number of occasions Mr. Bruce Hassam (sp). Is Bruce still with the company? I tried to call him recently to discuss “things.”

If there have been significant changes to the management structure at Luhrs, it might be beneficial for us if someone could post an org chart so we can see “who’s who in the zoo” there. As a retired Navy Surface Warfare Officer, I can appreciate a good wire diagram so I can see the chain of command.

Again, welcome to the forum,

Joe

Welcome Jim

It looks like Luhrs is looking to the future. I don't know about "get a life" Esquire. If the boat do what the owners say they do I would be very upset also. I just hope Luhrs an put this behind them now.

I agree, the issue of product quality is one thing, the "get a life" comment I took to relate to all of the garbage rumors about things that had nothing whatsoever to do with whether someone had a legitimate complaint and if that complaint was being handled fairly.

Nice to hear from you, thanks for taking the time to post that info. I have been a 32' Open owner for about 3 years and LOVE the boat.

As a current Luhrs owner, I have been very disappointed in the communication or "lack thereof" from Luhrs about the ongoing 41 saga. I firmly believe that there are three sides to every story, it would be nice to hear some honest factory side. I am looking forward to an end to this tragic story.

Jim,

I dont see how the closing of the St Augustine location could possibly be viewed as a good sign. It certainly seems that there are factors other than just the economy impacting Luhrs....Lets hope that consolidating all aspects of design and production will solve some of the problems that no doubt have caused Luhrs to take a hit. Despite a number of happy owners on this board (myself included), the Company's reputation has taken a serious hit in the boating community and is unfortunately on its way to being mentioned in the same sentence as Bayliner if things are not improved dramatically. A renewed focus on value and a better attention to detail would go a long way towards repairing a damaged reputation....

I completly agree with that. I really don't want to be looked at funny when I tell someone I have a Luhrs. The industry has been really beating up the Luhrs name - much of it due to the 41 Open issues I would guess.

the problem with this industry - or any other, 100's of great products are developed and 1 bad product hits the market and it takes years to regain confidence in the consumer.

My family loves our boat and I am VERY excited about the 37 Open, but need to see a major improvment in the boat quality before I could put myself into one.

By the way, not that this is important, but I am responsible for Quality Assurance at my company - and I bought the 32 Open.

I am banking that the NJ mfg team is going to have the ability to turn around the issues. I have only been on a Silverton at the boat shows and from what I remember they were pretty well built. I hope they start to inject some of the quality into Luhrs' lineup.

Let me start by writing that we have owned our Luhrs 320 Open for 9 years and close to 800 hrs (taking it as far north as Boston and as far south as Key Largo) and overall we continue to be very happy with it. Some random observations/musings:

Sometimes I think that Luhrs forgets that for the most part it is not attracting first time boat buyers. maybe a few people who have never owned a boat before but generally current boat owners moving up. A good number of these people actually know something about boats, they talk to others and they have certain expectations based in largwe part on their experiences and those of others who they have spoken to. In this internet age, this cannot be ignored. How long did it take you to get an owner's website up and running after seeing two other Luhrs boards floundering for years....

You cannot offer value that is clearly impaired or hampered by poor attention to detail, design flaws, poor dealer prep, etc. Particularly when your value proposition gets eroded each year and you position your product too close to the price point of better built/better designed/better executed competitor boats with a better reputation and resale.

I cannot fathom why Luhrs does not listen to its owners/dealers and fix problems/design flaws early on so that later models do not suffer. Luhrs built the 320 open from 1992/93 until 2008. I cannot tell you how many years went by that you did not address the transom door, unsealed lazarette hatch, no fishbox insulation, cabin hatches, etc. Kudos for the windshield and bench seatbacks but again it certainly took a long time....

Does Luhrs actually poll its existing owners who might move up? I tend to think not. The 38/40 simply did not offer enough to justify moving up and the 41...well, price aside, dont even get me started.

new 37 Open - I give Luhrs alot of credit for pushing the envelope a bit and doing IPS and outboards. I can only hope that the boat was properly engineered to handle the outboard and that hull balance works for both engine choices. The mid cabin stateroom is exactly what made the Ocean 40SF unique and now with engine choices that better allow for that design, I am thrilled to see Luhrs at the forefront. However, given the economy and a bruised reputation, I am more than a little worried....I have to believe that your dealers are quite unhappy given that a number of them have leftover 41s that are in some cases 2 yrs old...ugh...

So is the St. Augustine plant closing or not? Jim's note says the 34 Pilot and Trawler production are moving there.

Jim:

You indicated in your post that you will monitor this board, so I do hope that you will see this message and be able to provide some assistance or have the appropriate person at Luhrs contact me.

I have been dealing with Luhrs & South Florida Yachts about unresolved warranty work on a 36' Luhrs for four months and as of today am still unable to get it scheduled for completion. I'd be happy to provide you with my history of emails and pictures provided to SFY & Luhrs, since phone calls to Luhrs & SFY have not worked. At this point Luhrs and the dealership and vendors cannot agree on "who has the ball" and the fingerpointing about who is holding things up amongst them does not solve the problem.

Feel free to email me at BoatingLdy@aol.com if you prefer not to continue this communication via the message boards. Thank you.

Trina

Hi Jim, Congrats on the position! That's great news in this economy but like President Obama, you have a tough job ahead!

My question to you is can you PM me or post here where I can find information on the 1977 320 Super? I have been researching boats for a while now and I can find lots of information on line about the Silverton, Chris and Carver, but can't find any good information on the 1970's - 80's Luhrs.

Thanks!

Hi. My problems were mostly with things that the dealership (South Florida Yachts) should have done when prepping the boat since it was a 2007 leftover. Five months of aggravation chasing SFY & Luhrs have finally ended happily thanks to the fact that Luhrs now has a new head of Customer Service.

Jay P saw my posting here when he took over. He contacted me to find out what the problems were and arranged for everything to be corrected. Thanks to him and the staff he assigned to resolve the problems, my opinion of Luhrs is now very positive. It was a pleasure to finally deal with people who cared, who returned phone calls and who knew what they were doing. My compliments to Luhrs in making the change they did in Customer Service recently. Now it's time to enjoy the boat for some fishing again!!

BreamKiller,

you should post your positive respons on TheHullTruth.com. There is a pretty big 'Luhrs Bashing' going on over there since the Luhrs 41 problem...

Jim,

Congratulations on yor new role and thank you for taking the time to address some of the rumors. As others have noted most Luhrs owners are on at least their second boat, we recently purchased our second used Luhrs and didmn't purchase new because of all the current issues.

I think Luhrs builds a good product overall and had a good reputation and I think you can repair the damage by making more information on your corrective measures availableto the public and the sooner the better. Good nres travels fast but not as fast as the bad.

I would also like to concur with others regarding you dealer network; they seem very frustrated right now and not too willing to work with your customers and it has also been difficult to get answers from inside Luhrs. When sending in email requests you don't even get a confirmation...you just hope someone reads the email.

I know you have your hands full but getting soem of these thins handled would go al long way with customer satisfaction.

Thanks for eaching out and good luck in the new role!
